Race for the Cure and Purple Reign

What a busy week it was towards the end of October, maybe even the last of official event coverages for Memphis Woman. Seem the CA and WMC-TV were very interested in us not printing right now. Although on the Thursday, Oct. 23, several of our young breast cancer survivors featured on our site (www.memphiswomanonline.com) and I were on the Eyewitness Midday News (Channel 24/30) talking about more young women being diagnosed with breast cancer and the Race for the Cure. The same day I was honored at a luncheon for the Spirit of Kindness award by the The Kindness Revolution (www.thekindnessrevolution.net). Here is a pic of me and Dee Griffin who was not only a mistress of ceremonies but also an award recipient. It was such a great uplifting day!

The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis (WFGM) celebrated 13 years of grantmaking and social impact in Memphis with their Annual Grants Showcase and Volunteer Recognition event to acknowledge organizations and individuals in the community who work hard to transform the community while creating social change. Since 1995 the Women’s Foundation has successfully awarded over $4.1 million to 268 organizations. In 2008, WFGM will allocate $623,000 to programs through core grant-making, advocacy and research, that will help women and children reach their full potential.

The Blues Ball, A “Hallelujah Homecoming”

Memphians showed off their rocker attitude on Saturday, September 27, 2008 when the heart of downtown served as host for one of Memphis’s biggest fund raisers and festivals dedicated to Memphis music. The fifteenth annual Blues Ball was a giant celebration of the communities and music of Memphis.
Check out just a sample of some of the great fun and wonderful music on this video.

This year’s musical line included Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Floyd, The Bar-Kays, Larry Raspberry, Jason D. Williams, Andy Childs, Ruby Wilson, Voodoo Village & Special Guests, Garage Band Jam, Interstate 55 & Surprise Guests, Di Anne Price, Al Kapone & the Untouchablez, Billy Rivers & The Angelic Voices of Faith and Robert Raiford.
The Blues Ball / Memphis Charitable Foundation provides unparalleled support through this event for Memphis Area Musicians as well as powerful donations to organizations such as LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Baddour Center, Madonna Learning Center, Manassas High School, Humes Middle School and many others. The event returned “to the street” as last year encompassing over two downtown city blocks surrounding the Gibson Guitar Factory, The Westin Memphis Beale Street, the Westin’s multi-level parking garage, Morgan Freeman’s new club, Ground Zero and the Red Rooster Bar.

Now our first daughter Jennifer Sere and her husband Tim are expecting and we are thrilled... again! Zoo Rendezvous Celebrates 25 Years!

We just attended what is known as one of the best parties of the year in Memphis - Zoo Rendezvous. Lots of great food - over 77 restaurants, great music - over at least 4 bands on 4 stages and lots and lots of people. It's a HUGE event! This is also the Zoo's largest fundraiser of the year and brings in people from all over. And for the football lovers a TV room was set up near the Panda exhibit to watch Auburn at Mississippi State and Ohio State at USC. It was a little warm but there was plenty of ice cold drinks. A few folks were dipping their feet in the water fountain by the end of night. All ended well and except for a few gusts of wind it didn't rain or storm.

Les Passees Stock Exchange 2008 Preview Party

Stock Exchange, Les Passees’ yearly consignment sale fundraiser, kicked off its 22nd year on Aug. 19 at the Perimeter Shopping Center at 5246 Summer Ave.
Stock Exchange accepts a wide range of items, such as furniture, antiques, collectibles, art, jewelry, rugs, crystal, silver and china. Sellers set the price for their items and receive 70 percent of the sale. The remaining proceeds go to support Les Passees’ grant program, which donated funds to several local organizations in 2008, including MIFA’s City Kitchen project, the John Calipari Basketball School, Les Passees Kids on the Block and Memphis Elite All-Stars.

Les Passees will receive items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 4.The Preview Party was on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 7 to 10 p.m. The honorary chairman was there to launch Stock Exchange – Coach John Calipari. Regular shopping days will run from Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Memphis Music & Heritage Festival

We went to the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival in downtown Memphis on Sunday and had a great time. It's an annual Labor Day weekend music festival with 5 stages put on by the Southern Folklore Museum. Jason D. Williams played late Sunday night but he was terrific as usual. Had to get my picture made with him to add to my celebrity pic collection.

My Heart Throb

I saw my heartthrob from when I was about 10 years old last night! Do you recognize him? Most women my age have loved him for a very long time. He is sooooo Cute!!!
Yes, it's Davy Jones from the Monkees. He performed at Gold Strike in Tunica. I was such a big fan. Now if I could only meet Paul McCartney!

2008 "50 Women Who Make a Difference"

We just held our 12th annual "50 Women Who Make a Difference" Recognition dinner last night (8/25/08) a the Hilton Hotel. The remnants of Hurricane Fay made for a very wet night, lots of slow traffic, flooded streets, therefore making us get off to a late start. David and I were already at the hotel when the big rain started. We got a little wet earlier but the folks that came later were drenched.
Exactly three years ago in August of 2005 we had a very similar situation. The hotel was very busy with guests who had come up from the gulf to evacuate the areas from Hurricane Katrina. Dee Griffin, a reporter for Eyewitness News, Channel 24 was one of our award recipients that year. We recognized her early so she could get back to the station to report on the storm that we were now getting parts of in Memphis. When we left the hotel that night the streets were full of leaves and tree limbs. The next morning, New Orleans flooded.
Last night we had a wonderful turnout. Our presenting sponsor was FedEx and Rose Flenorl spoke to the audience. Karen Perrin, with FM 100 was our emcee for the 12th year. She has never missed a dinner but she was very pregnant with her younger son about 5 years ago when she participated. We weren't sure she would make it that year.

Melodie Moore, a young harpist that was one of Outstanding Young Women earlier this year, entertained the guests in the foyer before we started.
We finished the entire event at 8:35 - record time. I believe most guests think it will be a long event since we have so many women to recognize. Click on the photo album on the right side to see photos.
These women are so inspiring! They inspire me to keep this event and special issue going even though I have said over and over we may not do it again.

Every year I get so stressed out putting this event together. It should be getting easier after doing it 12 times but there are parts of it that become harder. I have become quite forgetful - I hear that is a normal part of what women go through at my age (51). I was quite calm before the dinner this year so I just knew I must have forgotten something big. Well a couple of things happened but nothing really big and nothing worse than years past. Maybe that's a sign that "the show must go on!"

Lisa's New Business
As most of you know, times have been tough for a lot of businesses. Advertising has dropped considerably in all media but we've been hit hard. We plan to print another issue towards the end of October that will include breast cancer issue and holiday things. We're also working on the annual Women's Yellow Pages that will include 3 web sites.
As if that's not enough to keep me busy I have started another business - Lisa's Favorite Things - to help offset some of the costs of not publishing a magazine every month. I hand paint wine, martini & champagne glasses.

Just click on the photo album on the right side to see some of my designs. I also make personalized bookmarks and candles. I have shown the glassware and bookmarks at wedding events. They make great gifts for brides to give their attendants and others.

Kentucky Conference

David and I just returned from the Women's Regional Publications of America conference in Louisville, KY. Cathy Zion, publisher of Today's Women and 2 other publications in Louisville hosted us. We were treated to great speakers, great food, great company (with great ideas and friendship) and of course, horse racing.

I've posted some pictures of some participants at the conference, Churchill Downs, and from our little side tour we took on the way out of town. The landscape was so beautiful and horses plentiful. I wasn't able to get very good photos of horses except at Churchill Downs racing. David and I stopped at the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln near Elizabethtown on the way home too. I like to photograph the outdoors - landscapes, rustic buildings, flowers and more. Check out the photo album on the right hand side. Enjoy!

New Logo for Web Site

Notice our new logo for our Memphis Woman web site. Coming up with a pretty green color was very difficult but I think I’ve found it. The green color signifies our “going green” with the web site and cutting back on the number of our printed magazines within a few months.
The butterfly signifies “rebirth” as we take this journey into a new dimension - not the “Twilight Zone” but the Internet. We’ve always been here but now it will be in a much bigger way. My passion is to promote women and to provide affordable advertising for small business during a time that advertising is one of the first things businesses cut back on in this economic slump.
We're leaving this week for the Women's Regional Publications of America annual conference in Louisville, KY. I'm excited about a new project we will propose to work together on to help promote women in business even more and everywhere!

David & I got to meet Amy Grant at her concert with the Memphis Symphony in April.
Then we met Issac Hayes at the Blues Ball Spring Auction. We've actually met him many other times but got a picture this time. Here we are with Stacie Waddell, co-chair of the auction.

Just last week we met Paula Deen at the opening of the new Paula Deen Buffet at Harrah's Tunica.
She's a hoot! And beautiful too!

I guess I'll go ahead and post this one from the Blues Ball last September with my friend Priscilla and Jana Petty. Yes, I'm fat but she is very petite.

Since I'm posting celebrity pics today, you might get a kick out of this one taken many years (and pounds) ago when I worked at Rum Boogie on Beale Street as Retail Manager. Do you recognize him? It's John Schneider from Dukes of Hazzard. He was in town for a few days while he performed in Oklahoma at the Orpheum.
I also have a photo of Lou Diamond Phillips while his band played at Rum Boogie but can't put my hands on it.

We're Pregnant!!!

Not me of course! We're going to be GRANDPARENTS! We are as excited as ever for our daughter Melissa and her husband of two years, Matt. It's funny how years ago, you weren't supposed to tell the pregnancy news until you had been to the doctor. They won't see you until you're about 8 weeks. I can remember waiting until 3 months but with our youngest Walker we told very early too. Melissa has a Dr. appointment on May 2. I found this image of what the baby should look like at different stages. We think it's (pardon the "it" for now) is in between these stages.

Last week, I met Lynne Tolley (right in photo), great-grandniece of Jack Daniel at the Southern Dinner and Whiskey Tasting hosted by the Peabody Hotel to promote the 75th anniversary of the Peabody Ducks in March. Watch for upcoming “Wine & Dine” featuring her and her recipes from “Cooking with Jack.”

Our April issue features the Outstanding Young Women of Memphis and is one of the most popular issues we do all year. We are very proud of the young women that are featured. All the girls profiled this month have been selected for this award from many nominations received from schools, organizations and businesses. We no longer have an awards luncheon for the Outstanding Young Women. Try to get 30 teenagers, their families and teachers together for one April or May afternoon and it’s practically impossible. Since most are seniors, that adds even more to their busy schedules. There never seemed to be a good day or time to have an event. Believe me, we tried. This year the nominators will receive a certificate to present to the girls however they wish.
While looking for quotes, I found this that fits perfectly for this April issue:
